Speech

Grade Level: 9-12
Duration: Preseason videos will be shown during September, practices start in October, speech meets run from November-mid April .
Practices: Students must attend team meetings. Team meetings will be the first Tuesday of the month. Meeting will be held on the second Tuesday if school is not in session on the first Tuesday. Practices are held Monday through Thursday. From 3:45-4:00 students may ask the coach quick questions. From 4:00-6:00 students may sign up for 20 minute practice blocks with the coach. If a student is in a group event they will set up times to practice with group members as well as the coach. Preparation on the student's own time is necessary for success. Students should also plan to listen to and watch fellow team members practice to learn and help give feedback.
Description: Speech students choose either original or interpretive speeches. Original speeches include: persuasive, entertainment, informative, extemporaneous. Interpretation events include serious or humorous cuttings from plays, books, or poetry which are "brought to life" by the student. Some tournaments offer additional events. Tournaments for speech take place on Fridays or Saturdays throughout the year in various parts of the state. Speech team members will also be required to do fundraisers.
Eligibility: Same as sports eligibility. Students must sign up what events they want to do at meets before the meet registration deadline. Students must have practiced the event with the coach.
Performances: 10-12 regular season tournaments for speech, plus district, state, and National Forensic League competitions. NFL competitions may qualify a student for national competition. Students must practice to go to meets.
Director: Mr. Lyon
Getting Involved: Students may join at any time during the season. Watch for signs and announcements at the beginning of the year or contact the coach.
Additional Information: C.H.S. is a National Forensic League Chapter. NFL is a speaking honor society which is nationally recognized. Students can qualify for this organization and join through speech.
