Room Expectations

|
Students are expected to fully participate in every activity.
As with every classroom in WestPark, I expect appropriate
behavior to be used with the teacher, other students, and
with the music room equipment. For the older students,
I expect them to come to class prepared with any homework
or their recorders, if needed.
|
Classroom Supplies

|
There are no needed supplies for the music room. The 4th
and 5th grade students play the recorder during the year, so
they
are expected to bring their recorders
every day during that unit. They have the option of purchasing one or borrowing
one from the school. |
Home/School Connection
|
I do not expect every student to leave my room a virtuoso
musician or an opera singer. I feel that students need to
experience music and have the chance to excel in a subject
that uses their brains in a completely different way than math
or reading. Students are not graded on their musical talent,
rather on their improvement throughout the year. Grading in
music is often seen as subjective, but I have specific criteria
for being able to sing in tune and
play instruments properly. |

Music lessons appear to raise childrens IQ,"
according to a study in the Journal Psychological Science in
August. A psychologist at the University of Toronto at Mississauga
put 6-year-olds in one of four groups: keyboard lessons, singing
lessons, drama lessons, or no lessons. After a year, the musical
children showed a seven-point increase in IQ, with improvements
in mathematical, language and spatial skills. The other two
groups had about a four point IQ boost. Parade
