The media center's collection consists of various print and non-print materials.
* Non-fiction books are primarily factual books on a wide range of topics. Also included are fairy tales, fables, and joke books. We have a primary non-fiction section for students in grades K-2 and another non-fiction section for students in grades 3-5.
* Fiction books are often referred to as chapter books and have fewer pictures with mostly words.
* Everybody books are those referred to as picture books or story books with mostly pictures. They are called "Everybody" books because everybody can find one in this section easy enough for them to read, even those who cannot read words yet!
* Biography books are those stories which tell about the true lives of people.
* Magazines are also available for student checkout.
* Kits are books and an audiotape or CD in a plastic bag.
* The vertical file has various small print materials that are not suitable for placing on the shelf. Examples are maps or brochures.
* Videos and CD-Roms for student use are available. They encompass a wide variety of topics and support the school curriculum.

Circulation

What's in the library media center?
West Park school library media center houses many types of materials to assist students in their educational needs. Included are books, kits (audiotape with book), videotapes, magazines, and CD-Roms. It is a privilege for students to check out materials from the library media center and it is the responsibility of the student to follow the rules regarding the use of the library's materials.

How many books/materials can I check out ?
Kindergarten students may check out one book at a time. They may check a book out every day if they bring back the other book.
Students in grades 1-3 may have one or two items. The first item must be a book. The second item can be a kit, magazine, videotape, or another book.
Students in grades 4 and 5 may check out two items at a time. The first item needs to be a chapter book for reading in the classroom and the other item can be anything else. Additional materials may be checked out by fourth and fifth grade above their two item limit if it is for research or a special project with the library staff permission.

How long can I check out materials from the library?
Materials from the library are automatically checked out for two weeks. However, students are highly encouraged to return materials AS SOON as they are finished reading or using them. This helps prevent loss and damage of materials. Renewal for additional time past two weeks is possible just by bringing in the book or material.

How do I know I have overdue books or materials?
Media center staff will contact students in person or my by written notice if materials become overdue past the two week time frame.
What are the overdue fines?
NONE! The media center staff just wants the books and materials returned so we do not assess overdue fines. However, if the material is lost or damaged beyond repair, the student will need to pay the cost of the book or material.

2. To provide resources that will support the curriculum, taking into consideration the individual needs, and the varied interests, abilities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and maturity levels of the students served.
3. To provide resources for teachers and students that will encourage growth in knowledge, and that will develop literary, cultural and aesthetic appreciation and ethical standards.
4. To provide resources which reflect the ideas and beliefs of religious, social, political, historical, and ethnic groups and their contribution to the American and world heritage and culture, thereby enabling students to develop an intellectual integrity in forming judgments.
