Scholarships


Thanks to the generosity of our alumni and community members, the Columbus Public Schools Foundation can provide students with scholarships to continue their education. Each year a committee comprised of high school guidance counselors, teachers and Foundation Board Members select the recipients. The following is a list of scholarships offered through the Foundation.

Class of 1940 War Memorial Scholarship - created by the generosity of the Class of 1940 as a memorial to friends lost in World War II.

Wilson-Covert Centennial Scholarship - named for Arthur Philip Wilson and Velma Covert Wilson. The Wilsons were born in 1890 in Polk and Platte counties respectively. Both were graduates of Columbus High School. Their sons, John Covert Wilson, class of 1943, and Arthur Philip Wilson Jr., class of 1940, established the scholarship in their parents' honor.

J.R. Curry Memorial Scholarship - created by the John and Deb Curry family, the Will and Jan Curry family, as well as J. R.'s grandparents, Virginia Curry, Robert Andrews and Laura Andrews. J.R. Curry, a member of the Class of 2002, died in a car accident on his 17th birthday in 2001.

Edward M. Nielsen Sr. and Edward M. Nielsen Jr. Memorial Scholarship - created by Ron and Roberta (Nielsen) Saalfeld and their children to honor Mrs. Saalfeld's father and brother. Both men were active in the community and education. The scholarship goes to a person attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business or College of Agriculture.

Speice Scholarship - was established by Byron Speice in appreciation of the education that Columbus Public Schools provided him and in memory of his mother, Margaret Speice, who taught in the Columbus Public System.

Sara Claborn Memorial Scholarship - created by Sara Claborn’s family. Sara died in an automobile accident in 2004. She was a football and girls basketball cheerleader.

Class of 1950 Scholarship- created by the generosity of the Class of 1950.

Catherine Johnson Memorial Scholarship - created by her family. Catherine served on the Columbus Public Schools Board of Education from 1974-1991.
