The Columbus High School counseling department would like to remind parents that class registration forms for the 2020-2021 school year need to be turned into the school as soon as possible. These forms give our counselors guidance on the college and career plan for each student.
The form can be dropped off at the high school Tuesday through Thursday this week from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the drop box located just inside the first set of doors. Forms can also be mailed to the high school. If students or parents have any questions, please contact your school counselor.

2020-21 course registration forms are still being accepted at CHS. Students can drop their registrations off in the drop box in the front entrance of CHS. Please contact your counselor if you have questions.

CHS is postponing its Second Annual Statewide Spanish Competition that was to be held on Monday, March 16th. This decision has been made due to health concerns of large group gatherings and recommendations by ECDHD. A new date has yet to be determined.

The Columbus Indoor Guard and Percussion will host the HWWA competition here at Columbus High School on Saturday, March 7 at 4:00 p.m. The event will feature the Columbus High School Winter Percussion, The Tempest Winds, and The Columbus High School Winter Guard along with 15 other performances from units around the area! Admission is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students, children under 5 are free. As a sanctioned show of the HWAA, no CPS passes can be honored.

Once Upon a Prom Dress will be held February 21st from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and February 22nd from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2200 25th Street, Columbus. This is a special free event for area high school girls. Each girl attending may bring one adult woman with her and must have a valid student ID.
Each girl attending may take at no cost: one dress, one pair of shoes and one set of accessories/makeup to complete her prom look. Attendees will also be entered into a drawing for either a hair style gift certificate or a corsage/boutonniere set.
Prior to the event, a dress drive will be held from 10:00 am to Noon on the northwest corner of Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 8th. New and gently used dresses, dress shoes, hair accessories, nail polish and handbags will be accepted. (Makeup is donated from independent beauty consultants in the area.)

CHS presents Fiddler on the Roof in the Nantkes Auditorium at Columbus Middle School. Showtimes are Friday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Admission is free with a CHS C-Stamp or adult pass. Heartland Athletic Conference Announces Expansion
The Heartland Athletic Conference (HAC) voted unanimously on Monday, Oct. 28 to expand to a 12-team conference beginning with the 2020-2021 fall season. Columbus High School applied for and accepted the invitation to join the HAC as a full-time member. “The current members of the Heartland Athletic Conference are excited to unanimously admit Columbus as they will be a great fit to our outstanding athletic and academic traditions. We look forward to the positive impact that Columbus will make in an already competitive conference.” Zach Limbach, 2019-20 HAC president, athletic director, Lincoln East High School
The conference’s current members are Fremont, Grand Island, Kearney, Norfolk and Lincoln Pius X high schools, along with all six high schools in Lincoln Public Schools: Lincoln High, East, North Star, Northeast, Southeast and Southwest.
The last time the conference expanded was in 2017 with the addition of Lincoln Pius X, Kearney and Norfolk high schools.

The USDA Summer Lunch program serves meals with milk, meat, fruit, vegetables & bread. The spring sports parents meeting at Columbus High is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, February 25th in the CHS Concert Hall. All parents who have students participating in track & field, baseball, boys' golf, soccer and girls' tennis are encouraged to attend.

CHS is excited to host A-3 District Wrestling Saturday. Wrestling will start at 9:00. This is an NSAA event no passes will be accepted. $8 for adults. $6 for students.

At approximately 8:35 a.m. CHS experience a fire alarm due to a burst sprinkler head. Students and staff evacuated the building at that time. Water was deposited in two classrooms. Classes are back in session.

There will be no school for students on February 14 and 15. School will resume on Monday, February 18 with a regular day of classes.

It is with great sadness that we report that Columbus High School Sophomore, Trevor Luckey passed away peacefully at Children's Hospital. Please keep the Luckey family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Congratulations to the Columbus Public Schools Skilled and Technical Science programs for receiving the Program of Excellence Award. This is one of the highest honors given to Skilled and Technical Sciences programs and departments in Nebraska and is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to the profession and students. The Program of Excellence Award provides public recognition on a local and state level and is presented at the Annual NCE/NASTSE Conference. In addition, if the recipients meet the criteria to be forwarded to the International Technology & Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA), they also receive recognition on a national and international level. They are also formally presented with an engraved plaque and other recognition at ITEEA's Annual Conference.

Winter Conditions / Driving Safety Reminder ... as everyone returns to school Monday morning please be very cautious driving as you may encounter slick areas on the streets around the high school in the staff and student parking lots . Your safety is very important to us.

Within the next hour, as part of CHS emergency preparedness planning, students and staff will take part in a building-wide evacuation. The steps we take today are to help ensure students and staff know what to do and where to go in the event that we would be ordered to evacuate our building due to an emergency. The safety of our students and staff are the foremost concern of our administration. There is no cause for alarm as today’s activities are a planned exercise.

Driving Safety Advisory ... concerns have been brought to the high school administration regarding the center turn lane at 38th Street and 38th Avenue being used as a drive lane when turning north toward the high school on 38th Street. For the benefit of everyone’s safety please drive defensively and use the center lane for turning only.

Upgrades are now in place to resume automated attendance calls to parents regarding their son or daughter’s absence that has not been excused. Attendance notifications are scheduled for 9:45 am; 1:30pm and 3:30 pm. Feel free to call the high school office if you have questions.
