Student Council is opening up a School Store called the Discoverer Den! On Nov. 22nd we will be selling items for DISCOVERER BUCKS. The counselors will be posting the list of items and prices in the grade level Google Classrooms so students can plan in advance. On Dec. 6th we will be selling these same items for cash. The Discoverer Den will be located in the ticket booth at the activity entrance and will be open from 3:30-3:50pm on Nov. 22nd and Dec. 6th.

Congratulations to Ms. Joni Ebel for being recognized as a state finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). This is the highest recognition that a K-12 mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. The award recognizes those teachers have both deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas. The USDA Summer Lunch Program will run from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. May 30-July 26 Monday through Friday at CMS, 2200 26 St. There will be no lunch served on July 4 and 5. The meal is free to all children ages 1-18. Adults accompanying a child may eat for $3.75. All meals meet USDA nutrition standards. The USDA Summer Lunch program serves meals with milk, meat, fruit, vegetables & bread. The USDA Food & Nutrition Service prohibits discrimination on race, color, national origin, age, sex or disability.

40 CMS students attended the UNL Discovering Engineering Day at UNL city campus Union. They went through 4 rotations where they learned about rockets, wind turbines, architectural engineering and software engineering.
Fifth Grade Band Night will be held Thursday, March 28 from 6 pm - 8 pm in the CMS cafeteria. Any 5th grade student interested in band for 6th grade should plan to attend with a parent. It will be an open house format for students to try playing the different instruments and a chance for parents to have questions answered. We hope to see you there.

8th Grade Boys Basketball On Monday the 8th grade boys played Kearney Sunrise. The B team won 24-8 with Tyson, Erid, John and Erick each scoring 8 pts. The A team lost 22-43. High scorers of the game were Liam with 9 pts and Brandon with 8pts. On Tuesday the 8th grade boys played Scotus. the B team lost 23-37 and the A team lost 26-52.
Congratulations to the CMS MathCounts team for earning 1st Place at their competition this past Saturday and qualifying for the state competition. The MathCounts team is comprised of Elijah, Cooper, Kaden and Braylon. Congratulations also goes to Tanner for earning the #1 overall ranking in the Count Down Round and to Elijah for winning the Count Down Round. Individual members include: Carter and Brenyn.

Congratulations to the CMS MathCounts Team for taking 1st place at the 2019 MathCounts Northeast Chapter Competition held at Central Community College on Saturday, February 2nd. The team qualified for the state competition held on March 16.
8th grade boys basketball suffered 2 losses last night against Lakeview. B team Lost 28-8. A team after fighting back from a tough deficit lost by 6 points with a score of 45-39. Next game is monday Against Kearney.
YFC is not having the CMS after school club today. Busses will NOT be here to transport students after school. The front office of YFC is open, but not open for student use. Their office is closing at 3:00 today. CMS activities and our after school program is scheduled as planned.

Columbus's defense hustled in the 4th quarter held Seward to zero points while scoring 9 of their 25 total points. Despite a hard fought game and never giving up Both A and B 8th Grade boys basketball teams were defeated last night. The B team lost 23-29. A team lost 27-44. 7th grade Social Studies students have been studying inventions from Ancient China like fireworks, the compass, the seismograph, silk cloth, The Great Wall, The Terracotta Army, acupuncture, the iron plow, the parachute, and the kite! After researching an invention they wrote a paragraph explaining the similarities and differences of how the invention was used in Ancient China compared to today. When their research was finished they designed a "China" plate that showcased their invention in the style of blue and white pottery made in Ancient China.

Last night the 7th and 8th grade wrestling team competed in the Great Plains Conference Tournament. After a great night of wrestling the team finished in 2nd place in both the weight class portion of the tournament and the Pin tournament. Great Job!!!
On Saturday, December 8th the 7th and 8th grade wrestling team traveled to Albion for the Boone Central invitational. The following wrestlers went undefeated on the day: Brenyn Delano, Nicholas Bennett, Kaden Brownlow, Adrian Bice, Caydn Kucera, Logan Salak, Antonio Granados, Cody Cuba, John Bloomquist, Kasen Grape, Liam Blaser, and Kaden Lewis.
On Tuesday, November 20th the 7th and 8th grade wrestling team traveled to Grand Island Walnut Middle school for the Turkey Tussle. A group of 7th-grade students attended WIN time for enrichment today in the style of an escape room. They worked in teams to solve clues about Ancient Egypt and open a series of locks. After they solved all 5 locks they were able to open the box and discover the surprise inside! All three teams were successful with time to spare!
Nebraska Extension – Platte County led the 4-H School Enrichment program called Leadership Summit for all CMS 5th graders on Thursday, November 8th at CMS. The Leadership Summit was a hiking theme leadership experience where students spent all day learning about themselves and how to work with others. The morning featured the opportunity to learn about their own personality and how they naturally operate as a leader as well as learning how to recognize, accept and value differences among their peers. After lunch, students rotated through sessions called Scenic Lookout (how to be an effective listener), Teamwork Tightrope (teamwork through communication), Tower Building (teamwork through working together) and Cards of Value (learning how to treat everyone respectfully). The day was a great opportunity for students to learn actively about how to be a great leader.
7th grade Social Studies finished their ancient Egypt unit with their Shark Tank projects. They presented "new" inventions from ancient Egypt to convince our Shark Tank Judges to invest in their company. Some of those new inventions include pyramids, embalming, bandages, papyrus, wigs, ink, and toothpaste. It was a great culminating project that tied in economics as well.
