Middle School Musical Creates Unique Opportunities

Few school traditions capture student talent, teamwork, and community pride like the Columbus Middle School Musical. Each spring, CMS students take the stage in productions that rival those of much larger programs. This year, that excellence earned statewide recognition: Omaha Performing Arts named Columbus Middle School's production of Disney's Newsies JR. the 2026 Outstanding Musical Theatre Production at the Nebraska Theater Academy Awards. The honor builds on a strong record that includes the award-winning The SpongeBob Musical, Shrek Jr., Sister Act Jr., and original plays and fairy tales. Each show reflects countless hours of rehearsal, the dedication of directors and volunteers, and students willing to take creative risks in front of a live audience. Families and community members are encouraged to mark their calendars now: the 2027 CMS Musical: Finding Nemo will be performed April 2–3, 2027.
The musical's success is a reminder of why fine arts belong at the center of a well-rounded education. Research consistently links participation in the arts to stronger academic engagement, better attendance, and growth in creativity, communication, and problem-solving. Those are the same skills employers and communities say they need most. On stage and behind the scenes, students learn to collaborate, meet deadlines, accept feedback, and persevere through challenges. Just as important, they find a place to belong, and many discover confidence they didn't know they had. At Columbus Public Schools, we believe fine arts are not an extra but an essential part of preparing students for life. We're proud of the young performers, technicians, and staff who made Newsies JR. a statewide standout, and of a program our whole community looks forward to every year.
Participation in the CMS musical is only available to students enrolled at Columbus Middle School.
