CMS Student says don't 'Dis Our Ability"

October was disability awareness month. We started the month with 5 School Unity advisory lessons which were put together by Bella, 8th grade student. She submitted a project to the Columbus Youth Philanthropy Contest and won a grant from the Columbus Area Youth Philanthropy Council. Her project is to raise awareness for people with disabilities. Bella has 2 sisters, who attend CMS and North Park, and 1 brother at North Park). She is the daughter of Sam and Krynn. This topic is near and dear to Bella and her family as her brother was diagnosed with Downs Syndrome when he was just a few days old.

Bella used her time this summer and with the help of Ms. Shevlin, CMS School Counselor, to create 5 lessons on disability awareness.  Students had time to reflect and had great discussions on the topic.  Students ended the week with a poster contest.  It is always a great reminder for everyone that we are all more alike than different and to not “DIS our ability.” Nice job Bella!
