Campaign signs for West Park student council candidates hang in the school's hallway.

West Park Student Council is ready to take on a new school year!  All 4th grade students are eligible to campaign to become a member of StuCo.  Each student that chooses to campaign must make a poster and give a speech to their class that includes the following information:

  • Why do I want to be a StuCo member?
  • What character traits do I have to make me a good StuCo member?
  • What kinds of project or activity would I like StuCo to do for our school?
  • Why do I think the project or activity would make our school better?

Selection of members is not by voting but rather by a point system.  After all students have given their speeches, classmates complete a scoring sheet and give points for demonstration of responsible, respectful behavior and kindness.  The three students from each class with the highest point total are the StuCo representatives.  This year 18 students campaigned!

West Park Student Council raises funds throughout the year by selling Smencils (scented pencils.)  These funds are used for various projects for our school and community.  We hold a Thanksgiving food drive and adopt families for Christmas gifts. StuCo members volunteer at the Book Fair and help with PTO family nights. They are also responsible for our building’s recycling program.

The goal of the West Park Student Council is to help make our school better as well as promote leadership skills and philanthropy in students.  We hope StuCo members go on to be leaders in middle and high school as well as in our community!
