COLUMBUS, NE. – Columbus High’s Director of Athletics and Activities, Tim Kwapnioski, has announced the hiring of Andrew Johnson as the head coach of the Columbus Discoverers girls basketball program. Andrew replaces head coach Scott Schaefer, who was hired in April 2021. Schaefer announced his resignation on March 25.
“We are confident Coach Johnson will bring his energy and drive to the Discoverers’ girls basketball program, where his determination for purpose and passion will help our basketball players reach their full potential,” said Tim Kwapnioski, Director of Athletics and Activities at CHS. “Coach Johnson believes basketball is more than just the wins and losses. He will focus on developing the complete athlete – mentally, physically, and emotionally. His goal is to build confident leaders, resilient competitors, and high-character individuals.”
Coach Johnson began his coaching career in 2012 as an assistant with the girls basketball program at York University. In 2014, he took an assistant position with York HS. In 2017, Coach Johnson accepted the Head Boys basketball position at Solomon HS in Kansas. He returned to York HS in 2021 to coach boys basketball. He is the current Head Boys coach at Hampton HS and Tennis Coach at York HS. Andrew received his Bachelor of Arts in 2013 from York University, where he was a member of the men’s basketball team.
