CMS families,

Columbus Public Schools has had some students that have gotten the idea of sticking items into their Chromebook ports in an effort to damage the device. This is a social media trend with dangerous consequences as there have been reported instances of injuries and fire. 

Families, this is serious and we need your help. In addition to a student potentially being harmed, there could be school consequences such as suspension or expulsion as well as legal consequences for vandalism and misuse of school property. In addition, intentional damage by the student to the device is not covered by the insurance purchased by you, and you will pay to repair or replace the device. This can cost you approximately $300. 

Below is the message we will share with all students:

Some students have gotten the idea of sticking items into their Chromebook ports in an effort to damage the device. DO NOT stick non-computer items into the Chromebook ports.
Students, this is serious. In addition to possibly harming yourself or others, there will be consequences such as suspension and expulsion for intentionally damaging your school issued Chromebooks. Intentionally damaging your Chromebook is not covered by the insurance purchased by your families and you/your parents will pay to repair or replace the device. This can cost you approximately 300 dollars. In addition, you could face school and legal consequences for vandalism and misuse of school property. 
School safety takes a community. If you see anyone being unsafe, it is important that you tell a trusted adult immediately. You can tell a teacher, counselor, administrator, or a family member.
