On this episode of Eyewitness Emerson... We are featuring Mrs. Brady, her Family Literacy program students, and all of the community resources they have been able to experience. Last week, students listened to a speaker from Columbus Parks and Recreation. She told us about the many exciting upcoming events that will be held in Columbus in the upcoming months. Things such as outdoor movie nights, summer camps for children, and a park scavenger hunt! All of these things and more can be found on the Columbus Parks and Recreation website: columbusne.us/769/Parks-Recreation Students were also visited by CPS principals and administrators. A community dietitian was also able to visit with students about how to create healthier meals at home. Students in the Family Literacy Program are also able to go on community field trips to places such as the children's museum, the Columbus Public Library, and the Field House located in the YMCA! The Family LIteracy Program has become a very beneficial program to parents in our community. In speaking with a few students, they feel the most beneficial things that have come from being part of this program are the new connections and friends they have made, the ability to feel more comfortable speaking and understanding English when out in the community, and being able to help their children with homework along with learning how to parent children who are bilingual. This program is available to parents who have at least one child enrolled and attending a Columbus Public Elementary School. The literacy program is free of charge, but those who are interested must apply. They will then be given a placement test to see whether the beginner or the advanced class will be the most beneficial to their needs. Be sure to tune in next week as we visit Emerson's office staff!

On this episode of Eyewitness Emerson... We recently had some visitors come to the Family Literacy program here at Emerson. Four ladies from The National Center for Family Learning came to conduct their yearly review. They were able to sit in on a typical class with Mrs. Brady. On that day, students were able to review their money counting skills, practiced asking and answering common phrases/questions with a partner, and were even able to visit a classroom in our school. When visiting the classroom, the Family Literacy students are able to watch and take notes right along with their elementary students . Tune in tomorrow where we will see all of the community interactions Mrs. Brady has been fortunate to bring in for her students.

Also today, the advanced level students were able to utilize iPads to work on things such as word opposites, word suffixes, and jobs commonly held at night. Be sure to tune in tomorrow and Thursday to see what else these very enthusiastic students and Mrs. Brady will be learning.
