Our third graders released their painted lady butterflies into the wild yesterday.
In science during the fourth quarter, third graders study the life cycles of plants and animals. They observed the larvae, or caterpillars, and watched them grow. When ready to build their chrysalis, they hang upside-down in a "J" shape and are very still. Inside the chrysalis, they go through metamorphosis, a complete change. After about 10 days, they emerge as butterflies. The butterflies live for about 14 days during which they find a mate and lay eggs to begin the life cycle again. Many questions were asked about butterflies, too. The main concern students had was the red fluid in the butterfly tent. Is it blood? No! It is a fluid from the metamorphosis from larvae to butterflies.
