The Kindergarteners had another community helper, a police officer, visit this morning. Officer Moore taught the students about what a police officer does, he showed them some tools that police officers may have to use, and he even gave a demonstration with one of the police department's drones. It was very exciting!

The Kindergarteners were extra lucky today because they had not one, but TWO, community helpers visit. After the police officer visited, the students had the special opportunity to meet their new principal for next year, Mrs. Bird. She told the students all about what a principal does, how principals support students, families, and staff members to help everyone work together, and she told them about how excited she is to be joining our North Park family. It was a great day!

The Kindergarteners are learning about community helpers this week! On Monday they had a local doctor, Dr. Rodehorst, come and talk to them about what a doctor does, the tools a doctor may use at their job, and the importance of seeing a doctor regularly.

During an indoor recess, 1st graders Sheyla and Alex teamed up to have a blast assembling a space puzzle after learning about outer space!

Columbus Community,
Please join us for the May 1st Community Meeting from 7-8 pm at the CHS Concert Hall. Dr. Kay will be providing updated growth data as new information has developed as well as suggestions that have been gathered to date from the community.

The 2nd annual North Park Easter Egg hunt was chilly, but everyone had fun!

Honoring Brooke!
At the start of the year, Mrs. Dodson presented an exciting challenge to the 4th graders: read and take tests on all 10 Golden Sower Nominees, and she would treat you to a pizza lunch!
Brooke embraced this challenge and today had a delightful outdoor lunch with Mrs. Dodson.
Way to go, Brooke! We're so proud of you for setting your sights high and achieving your goals!
Keep up the great reading!

Kindergarten has been learning about how people, plants, and animals change their environment. Today, we worked together to build an earthworm habitat. For the next week, students will observe the worms and take note of how the worms are changing their environment. Most students enjoyed touching the worms. Some students.. not so much! 😂

4th Grade Career Day was a hit again this year partnering with CCC here in Columbus. The 4th Graders in the whole district got to visit several of the buildings on the college campus and learn about career fields in Business, Marketing and Management, Human Sciences, Information Systems, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Skilled and Technical Sciences and Health Sciences. The students got to do some hands on learning in each of these career fields.

The kindergarteners LOVED having their Grandfriends visit them at school today. They played bingo, did an art project, ate lunch, and played at recess together! It was a "grand" start to the week!

First Graders got a chance to build upon their Kindergarten coding experience last week. On Day 1, students discussed what makes something a robot. They then discussed where we would see robots in and around Columbus. Ms. Shelia with the UNL Extension office read students "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" , then in groups they used coding instructions to move their BeeBot through the story.
On Day 2, students used the mat from the story to code between different foods. They worked on teamwork skills with 3 students creating the code, then directing the driver who entered it on the BeeBot. They got to take turns building code and then entering it. They learned how to apply the skills of retelling a story (we have been doing this in reading) and life skills of cooperation, teamwork, and perseverance to name a few.
Hopefully they're able to enjoy coding in 2nd grade and continue to build upon this cool skill!

Last Thursday was our annual Staff vs. 4th grade dodgeball game! 4th grade students who met their 3rd quarter AR goal were able to play against their teachers!

Coding: where logic meets creativity. The Kindergarteners had the opportunity to embark on a coding journey this past week thanks to the Platte County 4H Extension office. They learned how robots work and how robots can help assist and enhance human lives, from medical advancements to everyday tasks.
During this experience, the students had the opportunity to learn and experiment with coding by using a coding robot. They had to create a code to help the robot mouse find the pretend cheese. They sure had a fun time "mousing" around!

Kids grades K-6 join the CHS Track Team for their upcoming Youth Track Camp!

Oh, the places they'll go! The Kindergarten hallway has been decorated with all things Dr. Seuss to help celebrate Read Across America this month. Dr. Seuss' books are some of our students' favorites to read and listen to as they have many fun rhyming words and silly pictures to look at.

The Kindergarteners have been learning about tradespeople from colonial times and how different life was long ago compared to today. The other day, they learned about how challenging it was to build houses and make clothing. They have learned about how many of these jobs are still around today, but our updated technology makes these jobs easier to perform and complete faster than hundreds of years ago.

It's always fun to find new ways to practice! The Kindergarteners have been working hard on learning how to read and write this year. Today they practiced sounding out words and writing the words on magna-tiles with whiteboard markers. Time flies when you're having fun and these almost first graders are ready for next year's challenges!

Thank you to all of the grandfriends who joined us yesterday!
